Ana gave a fantastic presentation last Friday. Heartfelt and with passion. She has had a truly wonderful year and we will miss her. Of course the exchange student program does not work without the host parents. The Club extends our thanks to the Williams family from Mt Colah, the Burnetts from Ryde and the McConnells. We will see Ana 9:30 am at brunch on 7 January 2018 with her parents at Eden Gardens. All are welcome. A separate invite will go out shortly.
Josh Nowiczewski, our student going to Finland, also received his blazer and his mum Jen wore her blazer from when she was an exchange student! Josh has been learning Finnish but also Swedish as his school teaches in Swedish. He gave us his best wishes in Swedish. I am sure he is going to have a wonderful time and will be a great ambassador for our club and for Australia.
Our AGM was quick and efficient. The Board for 2018/19 will be President – Pam Wood, Secretary – Victoria Crawford (but maybe a new Board member will pick this up), Treasurer – Sandeep Rathi, Directors – Pat Perrin, Terrie McConnell and Mandy Van. Other responsibilities we’ll work out early next year along with leaders for our major projects.
The annual North Ryde Community Aid lunch for their elderly clients was a great success. David, Annette, Liane, Ian C, Victoria and Mike Hetherington plated the food and then washed up. There seemed to be a lot more plates than clients. The hall was set up very efficiently with the help of NRCA staff and a half a dozen volunteers from a local pharmaceutical company.
Nora Etmekdjian of Ryde Club is seeking help with the Salvation Army Appeal located outside the Post Office at Macquarie Shops. Monday 18 December, Tuesday 19 December, Wednesday 20 December, Thursday 21 December, Friday 22 December and Saturday 23 December. If anyone can assist please call her on 0417 699 955.
Remember there is no meeting this Friday. Some of us will be at the Cox’s Rd BBQ this Saturday 16 June and the Carols on the Common the following day Sunday 17 December. We still need a few helpers for the Carols so bring along friends or family if they are interested. Our meetings will then adjourn until 7 January at Eden Gardens.
We start the new year officially with breakfast 7:15 am at Caffe Incontro at Cox’s Mall on 19 January 2018. Remember in 2018 we will be starting our meetings at 7:15 am.
Following the many years of traditional Rotary Christmas cards, we’ve launched the modern, efficient, environmentally-friendly version – CHRISTMAS E-CARDS!!
Proceeds from the sale of our e-cards support Interplast in rebuilding bodies and rebuilding lives in the Asia-Pacific region.
Recipients of the e-cards you choose will see our Rotary and Interplast logos when they open their cards.
You and your club members and/or friends can take advantage of this service by going to our website at http://ryderotary.org.au/e-club-ecards and following the instructions there.
We hope you will join us in this initiative to support a really good cause, and to further demonstrate that e-clubs really can do just about anything conventional clubs can do.
As happens every year, the RYLA program of 2018 includes a formal dinner for RYLA participants and the Rotarians of their sponsoring clubs. It is an important part of the RYLA experience, and an opportunity for us to show our sponsored young leaders that RYLA is a program which we as Rotarians hold in high regard. It is also a chance to get to know your sponsored participants better, and invite them to your club meetings to talk about their RYLA experience or as potential new members.
It would be great if we could have a strong turnout of District 9685 Rotarians. Partners and guests, including the parents and family of sponsored participants, are more than welcome.
The formal dinner will be held on Tuesday 9th January 2018 at Miramare Gardens, Terrey Hills. The event commences at 6.30 pm and will conclude at approximately 10.30 pm. The cost is $50 per person and includes a two-course meal. Our guest speaker will be Michael Regan, Mayor of Northern Beaches Council.
If you wish for family and/or friends to attend, please provide their names, Club association and any dietary requirements to RYLA dinner coordinator, Raylene Jarvis of Upper Northern Beaches Rotary Club. Her contact email is raylene2@iprimus.com.au
Payment for the dinner can be made by direct deposit:
Please complete payment by December 31st and send an email to Raylene when a direct deposit payment has been made.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact myself or Raylene.
Yours in Rotary, Alan Oertel District 9685 RYLA Chair

Gill Hicks is considered to be one of the most thought provoking, powerful and life affirming speakers in Australia and the UK. She is globally known as an Advocate for Sustainable Peace and a valuable resource in Countering Violent Extremism.
Her devotion to making a personal greater contribution and positive difference to the urgency of building peace was realised when she was made permanently injured in the London terrorist Bombings on July 7th, 2005.
Her ‘lived experience’, from survival to rehabilitation as a double amputee created a clear demarcation from all she had known before the bombings, being at the helm of some of the UK’s most prestigious and respected institutions – including Publishing Director of the architecture, design and contemporary culture magazine, Blueprint, Director of the Dangerous Minds design consultancy and Head Curator at the Design Council, along with being one of the first women to be invited to become a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (the RSA).
Her 2nd Life is built on what she describes as a series of conscious choices, of mindfulness and being aware of the importance of the moment. Sharing what she has learnt about herself, about humanity and the extraordinary and what she believes is an inherent ability to not only face but to rise in the wake of adversity is not only inspiring, but it is a valuable insight into what is possible in life.
There are a number of accommodation options available in Leura, Katoomba and surrounding towns. However the Fairmont Resort has provided options for the Conference weekend.

The Conference Program includes keynote lecturers and presentations from international and national leaders in the industries of ‘Economic and Community Development and Peace’. Delegates will hear about the underlying causes of conflict including poverty, disease, lack of water and food security and the lack of education from our inspirational and stimulating speakers.
