Hello Fellow Rotarians and friends,

It is a short newsletter this week as last week there was no meeting. I hope everybody enjoyed the sleep in.

As we generally do during this time of the year, we will be sending out a member survey to all the members. Please take some time to fill out the survey so that we can get your views.

We have heard from the organisers of RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) program that there is a change in venue for the 2023 program. This has resulted in the date of the program being moved back one week now being Sunday 15 January 2023 to Saturday 21 January 2023.  The not so desirable news is that this venue comes at an increased cost and therefore the program participation costs will go up. The organising committee is seeking clubs support to ensure the sustainability of this widely renowned and respected program for future generations of young leaders.

The North Ryde eFun Run Sponsors’ breakfast will be held this Friday. Thank you to everybody who is going to be attending in person or by Zoom. Because of a work commitment, I will have to miss the event. Please enjoy the breakfast and the presentations from Australian Rotary Health and Centre for Emotional Health.

Binoe is up and running as the Treasurer, with all the arrangements at the bank now complete. I know that he will do a great job and I wish him all the best.

I will be attending the Presidents meeting for District 9685 which is going to be held on Saturday 23 July.  On Thursday 28 July, the Riverside Cluster Presidents Meeting is being held at Hunters Hill Club.

The District Grant application for “Caring for Environment – Photography Contest” has been submitted to the district. We expect to hear about the outcome in the coming months.

Our Secretary, Bob Selinger, OAM has put together an educational document on how we communicate as a club and circulated it by email. Please review Bob’s email as it contains some very useful information – a refresher for the oldies and an introduction for the newbies!

I thank everyone in the Club for their commitment, energy and contribution towards making a difference.

Uluru Statement From The Heart
North Sydney Sunrise Living Well with Glaucoma – 26 July 2022 – Gem Che
It is estimated that over 300,000 Australians have glaucoma, yet 50% are unaware they have it, thinking they have healthy eyes.  Anyone may develop glaucoma, but the incidence increases with age. About 1 in 10,000 babies are born with glaucoma, by age 40 about 1 in 200 have glaucoma, rising to 1 in 8 at age 80.

Known as the 'silent thief of sight' glaucoma develops slowly and often without any symptoms, leaving people undetected until the disease reaches an advanced stage. Left untreated, glaucoma can cause vision loss and may even lead to blindness. But if detected early, glaucoma can be managed and vision loss prevented.

Gem Chew (a Glaucoma Australia clinical volunteer) will provide an overview of glaucoma, the importance of early detection as well as tips on living with and managing this condition.

Gem is a fifth year medical student at UNSW and is currently on clinical rotations with an ophthalmology clinic in Green Square where she is working as an Ophthalmic Assistant.

The meeting will be held at Piato Restaurant, 123 Blues Point Road, McMahons Point at 7:00 am for 7:15 a.m. start. We finish promptly at 8:30 a.m.  At about 7:30 a.m., Gem will talk for about 30 minutes, followed by questions and breakfast is served during the talk.
