President's Message

Dear  Club Members and Friends,

The Country students DIGIT Tour was a wonderful success last week! Although we only had 4 students able to attend this year, the feedback from everyone involved was that it was a very valuable and worthwhile project for our Club to undertake. There are so many people to thank, as it is quite a team effort to bring everything together.

Thank you to Terrie McConnell for contacting the country Rotary clubs and schools to organise the students who participated. Thanks to the members, friends and their families who hosted the students including Annette Billington, the McConnell family, David and Gwen Martin, Jen and James Nowiczewski.

Thanks also to David Martin, Garry Maloney, Liane Corbett and Mandy Van who helped supervise the students on their tour and the evening activities. Thank you to Victoria and Ian Crawford who organised the dinner at RDA and the members who contributed salads, drinks and other goodies for the dinner. Riding for the Disabled was a great venue for the dinner and we really appreciate the support from Ron and the team at RDA for making the final night with the students memorable and fun.

David and Garry helped me contact the businesses and the Universities who organised tours and talks for the students. The feedback from the students, the supervising Rotarians and the company representatives were very positive and enthusiastic. Many of the  contacts have happily offered to do the tours again next year.

And last but not least, a HUGE thank you to David Martin for the coordination of the week and for his support of the students. It was an enormous commitment of time and effort and we all really appreciate David's enthusiasm and dedication to providing a fabulous opportunity for these young people. David helped with transport to and from the station; supervised the students on their visits three out of the four days and at all the evening activities!

I have included some photos from the DIGIT Visit in this bulletin and also in the photo album section.

We look forward to welcoming Juliet Chen's cousin, Lily Shi as guest speaker at our breakfast meeting this Friday. Lily is visiting from the US and will talk to us about her life and Black Holes!

Stories
2019 DIGIT Visit
Each year, the Rotary Club of North Ryde runs a tour, in May, of local technology based companies for students from Country NSW.  We have been running the programme for 13 years or so.

We work with Rotary clubs in West Wyalong, Forbes and Inverell to source suitable students from year 10 at their local high schools.  We take up to 8 students each year.  The students travel down to Sydney on the Sunday and are then hosted by Rotarians through until Friday morning when they return home.

Rotarians take the students on a series of visits to technology based companies such as Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, Cisco, Facebook and Google and other major companies which use technology in their businesses such as Coles, Optus and Canon.  They also see how technology is used within the Universities of UTS and Macquarie and visit the Sydney Observatory.

The idea is to provide the students with an insight into not only how technology is used in the workplace but what job opportunities there are available to them after school.

This year we had 4 students from schools at  Ashford and Forbes who participated in the program from Sunday 26 May until Friday 31 May. Each student prepared a presentation about their experiences during the tour at Canon on Thursday afternoon. The students gave their presentations at a special farewell dinner provided by the Club at Riding for the Disabled, Marsfield that evening.
