The Rotary Club of North Ryde runs an annual tour, in May, of local technology based companies for students from Country NSW. We have been running the programme for more than 10 years. We work with Rotary Clubs in West Wyalong, Temora, Forbes and Inverell to source suitable students from year 10 at their local high schools. We take up to 8 students each year.
The students travel down to Sydney on the Sunday and are then hosted by Rotarians through to Friday morning when they return home. Rotarians take the students on a series of visits to technology based companies such as Microsoft, Oracle, Cisco and Google and other major companies which use technology in their businesses such as Coles, Optus, Cochlear and Konica Minolta. They also see how technology is used within the Universities of UTS and Macquarie.
The objective is to provide the students with an insight into not only how technology is used in the workplace but what job opportunities are available to them after school.
This year we had a total of 7 students: 3 students from Forbes, 2 from Inverell, 1 from Ashford and 1 from Warialda.

Here are some comments from the students
Very thankful to participate and would highly recommend. Understanding where all our data goes when its put in the cloud. Stuart Cuskelly
Even though all the technology companies had different products, the work Environments were very similar, and their goals were almost the same. … that there is a bright future for the technology industry. Molly
This program is fun and has taught me lots about IT. Also a key takeaway was meeting new people with similar interests and getting to experience the city. Also been given opportunities we wouldn’t have got at home. Lachy Kearney-Pallister
I thought the tour was very good. A key takeaway was that there are many opportunities for IT jobs in the city. It was also good to see how the IT principles that I had been playing around with, are applied in the real world. James Paton
I really enjoyed it and would recommend to future students. Was great to have a mix of sightseeing and going to businesses. Even if I don’t pursue a role in IT directly, it was great to open some options and see what things are available. Jack Dekkers
I was able to take some inspiration from this trip, such as looking into software engineering for example. A couple of contacts from Oracle and Cisco allows me to build more relationships in the future, also can get me into a full-time internship in programming. Haizen Way
It is fun experiencing offices and tours not many people get to see. My takeaways are: Powerhouse Museum servers; Oracle racing experience; Google office; Cisco office; Freebies! Ethan Bonehill
Thank you
A big thank you to the schools for their support, the students for their enthusiasm and wonderful behaviour, the companies for their generous time in showing the students their IT, the Rotary Club of Epping for help with the hosting of students, and Riding for the Disabled for providing the venue for a wonderful celebratory dinner.
A special thanks to PP David Martin, PP Peter Mason, PP Mandy Van and President Sandeep Rathi for organising the week and taking students to all the various companies, tours of Sydney and fun events like bowling. It is a great project - we dig it!
