Hello Fellow Rotarians and friends,

Welcome to this fortnight’s newsletter.

The dinner held at RDA on Thursday 18 May was a great conclusion to the DIGIT week - IT Tour for Country Students. Seven young men from the towns of Forbes, Inverell, Ashford and Warialda did themselves proud as they spoke about their experience through the week, what they had learned and how it was going to help them. The significance of such a visit for some of them was expressed in one of the student’s remark – “It was the best week of my life!”. At the dinner, it was wonderful to hear from Revathi Venkatraman, Regional Vice President for Slack (A Salesforce Company) who spoke about her experience in the Information and Communications Technology industry.

A big thank you to Past Presidents David Martin, Peter Mason and Mandy Van who took them around to various information technology organisations. We are very grateful that Rotary Club of Epping decided to join our project and special thanks to the host families from the club - Monica and Geoff Saville, Narelle Barker and Susie and Stephen Llewelyn.

It was a fun and experiential week for the students and going by their comments and feedback, everyone really enjoyed their time in the Big Smoke! Thank you to all the organisations that were involved this time and who went out of their way to make the visit useful, meaningful, and fun. And finally, words are not enough to express our appreciation for David who put in so much effort and energy in the organization of this very worthwhile project and has been doing so for a number of years.

Last week we had a brief introduction to the two students from Marsden High School who are attending the RYPEN Winter program through our club’s sponsorship. The Rotary Youth Program for Enrichment is an intensive residential weekend program where young people aged approximately 14 to 16 years (Years 9/10) will develop increased motivation, improved life skills, better self-image, pride in themselves and an understanding of setting and achieving goals. At the same time, participants interact with peers from different backgrounds, and different parts of our district, improving their teamwork skills and having fun! All this is done in an informal atmosphere, where
questions and debates are encouraged.

On Saturday 3 June, we have the Bunnings Gladesville BBQ. These BBQs have been an important fundraiser for our club. We hope to see several of you on the day.

This month we are going to have only two meetings – Friday 2 June and Friday 9 June. It is hard to believe that the Rotary year is coming to an end and it is time to hand over the reins to a new board.

All of you would have received an invite to the Changeover Dinner on Friday 30 June 2023.  President-Elect Bernie and I are looking forward to enjoying the night with you where we celebrate our club’s achievements and recognize individuals within the club as well as in the community.

I thank everyone in the Club for their commitment, energy and contribution towards making a difference.

The 2022-23 presidential theme logo was designed by renowned Australia-based Indigenous artist Riki Salam to represent RI President Jennifer Jones’ theme and initiatives. The logo represents key elements of Rotary while honouring the Indigenous culture:
  • The circle signifies connections to one another.
  • The dots around the circle represent people, one for each of our areas of focus.
  • The circle and the dots together become a navigation star, which signifies Rotary’s guiding light.
  • The solid line underneath signifies a digging stick used for hard work — a tool that Rotary’s people of action use to get things done.

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the country on which we meet, the Wallumattagal people of the Eora Nation. We recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.

Stories
DIGIT 2023
The Rotary Club of North Ryde runs an annual tour, in May, of local technology based companies for students from Country NSW. We have been running the programme for more than 10 years. We work with Rotary Clubs in West Wyalong, Temora, Forbes and Inverell to source suitable students from year 10 at their local high schools. We take up to 8 students each year.

The students travel down to Sydney on the Sunday and are then hosted by Rotarians through to Friday morning when they return home. Rotarians take the students on a series of visits to technology based companies such as Microsoft, Oracle, Cisco and Google and other major companies which use technology in their businesses such as Coles, Optus, Cochlear and Konica Minolta. They also see how technology is used within the Universities of UTS and Macquarie.

The objective is to provide the students with an insight into not only how technology is used in the workplace but what job opportunities are available to them after school.
This year we had a total of 7 students: 3 students from Forbes, 2 from Inverell, 1 from Ashford and 1 from Warialda.

Here are some comments from the students

Very thankful to participate and would highly recommend. Understanding where all our data goes when its put in the cloud.  Stuart Cuskelly

Even though all the technology companies had different products, the work Environments were very similar, and their goals were almost the same. … that there is a bright future for the technology industry.  Molly

This program is fun and has taught me lots about IT. Also a key takeaway was meeting new people with similar interests and getting to experience the city. Also been given opportunities we wouldn’t have got at home.  Lachy Kearney-Pallister

I thought the tour was very good. A key takeaway was that there are many opportunities for IT jobs in the city. It was also good to see how the IT principles that I had been playing around with, are applied in the real world.  James Paton

I really enjoyed it and would recommend to future students. Was great to have a mix of sightseeing and going to businesses. Even if I don’t pursue a role in IT directly, it was great to open some options and see what things are available.  Jack Dekkers

I was able to take some inspiration from this trip, such as looking into software engineering for example. A couple of contacts from Oracle and Cisco allows me to build more relationships in the future, also can get me into a full-time internship in programming.  Haizen Way

It is fun experiencing offices and tours not many people get to see. My takeaways are: Powerhouse Museum servers; Oracle racing experience; Google office; Cisco office; Freebies!  Ethan Bonehill

Thank you
A big thank you to the schools for their support, the students for their enthusiasm and wonderful behaviour, the companies for their generous time in showing the students their IT, the Rotary Club of Epping for help with the hosting of students, and Riding for the Disabled for providing the venue for a wonderful celebratory dinner.

A special thanks to PP David Martin, PP Peter Mason, PP Mandy Van and President Sandeep Rathi for organising the week and taking students to all the various companies, tours of Sydney and fun events like bowling.  It is a great project - we dig it!

Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve…. You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”

~Martin Luther King, Jr.
