Hello and welcome to the latest of the Presidents' ramblings from the Rotary Club of North Ryde.
Peter and I would like to congratulate the club on a successful submission for a Global Grant with other Rotary Clubs around the world to provide a mobile pathology bus. This will provide healthcare check-ups and testing in communities near Kolkata, West Bengal, India in partnership with Behala Balananda Brahmachari Hospital and Research Centre. The application was submitted by the Rotary Clubs of Calcutta and North Ryde. This application was granted and completed on behalf of Rotary Foundation. This has the potential to help many thousands of lives in that community in India. This is one of the areas of focus of Rotary. Apart from supporting local communities we also support national and international projects with our Rotary Club of North Ryde. Congratulations go to Bob Selinger OAM for putting together this Global Grant application.
It was wonderful to hear from our exchange student, Edith Poulson, over in Denmark. Edith sent us a wonderful video to tell us all about what she's been up to in her eight months so far in Denmark. We think she's having way too much fun and we don't know how she's going to possibly come home. Her time in Denmark has included a trip Euro tour, which she featured in her video and looked like an enormous lot of fun thank you Edith for sending us your video which we viewed at the club meeting last week. Thank you to Jaimie, Edith's dad, for all his effort in getting the video to us.
The Tree of Joy is a lot of work for our Club, however the joy that it brings to the local community is beyond belief. So many people who would otherwise not have anything for Christmas will have a present to open and we thank all of those who are involved in supporting this project.
Work is also full steam ahead for the Carols on the Common event on Sunday 13 December 2026. If anyone can give us a hand by volunteering in any roles, could you please contact Pam Wood, and she will add you to the volunteer list see more in this bulletin.
Until next time,
Regards
Bernie and Peter Mason

The bidirectional relationship between sleep and mental health is well established, yet the version that reaches us rarely extends beyond "if you sleep poorly, you feel worse" alongside sleep hygiene advice. This talk aims to deepen our understanding of how sleep and mental health are related. It discusses the connection between sleep and mental health, clarifies what the literature says compared with what has made it to the posters, and outlines the aspects of sleep health that matter most for mental health. These themes are explored through common clinical scenarios, illustrating how the sleep and mental health link plays out in practice. The talk offers clinicians and community members a more nuanced account of why sleep matters, and how best to care for it.
Today, I’d love to invite you to join thousands of people taking part in one of the year's most colourful (and gloriously unfashionable) fundraising events.
It’s called Loud Shirt Day – a colourful celebration where clubs, teams and communities wear their boldest, brightest and most outrageous shirts to raise awareness and vital funds for children with hearing loss.
It’s simple, fun and a great excuse to swap your team colours for something a little louder. Whether it’s a "best worst shirt" competition, themed training session or colourful club day, every loud shirt helps give children the support they need to thrive.
On Friday, 16 October (or any day that works best for you) wear your loudest, boldest shirt and raise funds to help children with hearing loss…it’s as simple as that!
“What began as a fun idea has become a much-loved tradition. More importantly, everyone knows they're making a genuine difference.” Nathan, Loud Shirt Day participant, Keysborough Golf Club
Funds raised help provide life-changing services like speech therapy, audiology, early intervention and family support – giving kids with hearing loss the tools they need to thrive.
Register today and we'll help you get started with everything you need, including fundraising tips, resources and plenty of inspiration to make your Loud Shirt Day a success.
